Legacy Riders

Motorcycle Trip June 2009 022

Who knew that a three-day motorcycle trip would end up being a bucket-list for one of our Legacy men?
On June 18, six men road out of Murfreesboro headed to Alabama and Mississippi. Destinations included 29 Dreams motorcycle campground, Barber Motorsports Museum and a portion of the Natchez Trace Parkway.
The group could not have picked a hotter weekend with temps pushing high 90’s each day. Ages of the group ranged from a couple of pre-legacy aged men with the rest in their 60’s. The anticipation of the trip and planning precluded anyone bailing out. The mornings were beautiful and the best strategy for beating the heat was to keep moving.
The first night lodging at 29 Dreams just south of Leeds, Alabama was an oasis for the hot travelers. The following day, after a great breakfast together, the group navigated to one of the world’s premiere motorcycle museums and racetrack… Barber Motorsports, on the east side of Birmingham. After a couple of hours of reminiscing about our previous rides and ogling the fantastic machinery, the group mounted their steel horses and set out for Tupelo, Mississippi.
To beat the heat on the final day, the group decided on an early morning departure for the Natchez Trace Parkway. The ride was incredible and the parkway shade provided natural shelter from the intense heat. Our reward was lunch at Puckett’s Grocery in Leipers Fork before the final leg home.
Hot, tired and road weary after almost 700 miles together with brothers, we all pull into home. The highlight for many of us was just the chance to ride together. Who could have known that such a simple three day trip would have been for one of the riders, in his words, “this is a bucket list for me”. Never before had he experienced the long-distance riding and brotherhood of a group of men his age. In the coming days those same men would stand over his hospital bed offering prayers, laughs and encouragement after a planned extensive surgery.
Note: A bucket-list is a term made famous by the recent movie of the same name. A bucket list is the things you want to accomplish before leaving this world.
